Jesse Wood

Born in Marina del Rey, California in 1972 Attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, MA from 1990-91 Attended Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia in 1994 Lives and paints in Santa Fe, New Mexico

There was a period when I considered my three chief interests in life to be reading, traveling and painting. That was about 15 years ago when I first considered leaving school for something more conducive to the life of an artist. Since then I have followed that troika relentlessly, allowing one dream to lead me to the next in a fluid dance of books, brushes and backpacking. I spent the better part of a decade living in Europe, South Africa and various American ports of call while traveling to Asia and South America. Most currently I am settled in New Mexico and focused on painting. Here I have rediscovered my enthusiasm for the limitless Southwestern desert, though my artwork reflects the variety of places I visited in the past. Reading still provides inspiration in the form of titles and ideas for many of my paintings and serves as a less exhaustive way to travel. Artistically, the influences on my artwork can be traced to a variety of places. Rather than list them, I would encourage the viewer to try and decipher my canvases as they might a menu in a foreign language, to let their imagination fill in the gaps while the stomach rumbles in anticipation.
