To describe his work, C.W. Mundy likes to use the analogy of literature and poetry. “Literature is factual and sterile,” says Mundy, “Poetry invites the reader to bring their personal interpretation.” I hope the viewer of my work gets the sense of poetry in the abstraction of what they are seeing.”

Mundy graduated from Ball Sate University in Indiana where he was also a NCAA basketball player. He continued his education in California, receiving his MFA from Long Beach State University. While living in the West, he became involved with a band, in which he pursued his love for the guitar and banjo.

Soon finding himself again in Indiana, Mundy began creating athletically inspired collector’s work for the NBA and the PGA. Some of these works now appear in the permanent collections of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the Indiana 500.

Mundy’s art was evolving, and through his determination to reveal himself in his paintings and interact with his subjects, his work changed dramatically. He attended workshops under some of the artists that he admired, such as Dan Gerhartz and Scott Christensen. He discovered that he could react to and share with the subject that he was painting and soon his personality and beliefs were coming out in his work. This can be seen in the techniques that he uses in his paintings today. Mundy’s expertly smeared brush strokes and aloof palette knife work have become a unique and refreshing trademark on his presence in the art community.

Now enjoying participation in group exhibitions, such as Denver’s Artists of America, Chicago’s Oil Painters of America, and the Hoosier Salon, Mundy has found true success in his work. His work has also appeared in the national publications such as Southwest Art, and on the cover of International Artists Magazine.

Personal expression has brought an undeniable enrichment and freedom to the subjects contained in C.W. Mundy’s work. Meyer Gallery is proud to represent and offer the work of C.W. Mundy in this same tradition.
