Painting on metal with oil glazes is a technique dating from the 15th C. Renaissance in Europe, but is uncommon in contemporary painting. Lovelace, who was familiar with copper plates from his many years as a master printmaker, has used them as “canvases” for the past seven years. The artist combines the reflective quality of the copper with the vehicle of oil to create atmospheric paintings with a strong physical presence. Lovelace says, “I find myself drawn to land that has been cultivated continuously for thousands of years, where people seem to live in harmony with nature away from the intrusions of modern technology.” His newest work from Ireland and France furthers the notion of the age-old complicity between man and nature. A fruit tree needs support to bear the burden of its tremendous productivity. A fishing boat is grounded by tidal action. These evocations of interdependence also serve as metaphors for the creative process.
Lovelace began his training at the University of Colorado, where he earned his BFA in 1976. An apprenticeship at Landfall Press in Chicago brought him in contact with such artists as Christo, William Wiley and Claes Oldenburg. At the University of Washington, he earned his MFA in Printmaking in 1979, under the direction of Jacob Lawrence and Glen Alps. Noted artists with whom Lovelace regularly collaborated at his printmaking studio Stone Press included such luminaries as Jacob Lawrence, Paul Horiuchi, Russell Chatham, Art Hansen, Dale Chihuly, and Robert Bateman. These days Lovelace is devoting himself to his own painting at a studio in the San Juans, a setting which allows him to be closer to nature and a rural lifestyle.
While the paintings on copper are relatively new in the span of a long career, Lovelace’s works have been collected by such institutions as Safeco, King County Arts Commission, United Airlines, Swedish and Providence Hospitals, Boeing, AT & T, Nordstrom, and Preston Thorgrimson Ellis & Holman. He has been interviewed on CNN and Northwest public radio stations, and has guest lectured at museums and universities throughout the Northwest.
Kent Lovelace was born in Washington D.C. in 1953. He was raised in the San Francisco Bay area. He received his BFA from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1976 and his MFA in from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1979. His graduate studies were under the direction of world renown artist Jacob Lawrence. Kent also apprenticed as a lithographer at Landfall Press in Chicago; working as assistant to Claes Oldenburg and Christo, among others.
Kent has been the Master Lithographer for Stone Press Editions,Inc., in Seattle, WA since 1979. During this time, Kent has been the principle printmaker for artists Jacob Lawrence, Robert Bateman, Dale Chihuly, and Monte Dolack, and worked extensively with Russell Chatham and many others.
Kent's own artwork can be found in most major public and private collections throughout the Pacific Northwest and many others nationwide. He also maintains a frequent exhibition schedule with galleries in the West.
Travelling extensively, Kent paints almost everywhere he visits. His recent travels have him painting in the Dordogne region of France, the Italian Umbria, and the Big Hole in western Montana. Says the artist, "Everywhere I go, I bring something back. I love to see the landscape through painting." The artist's focus is on color, composition and surface.
He has long been interested in the pastoral landscape, particularly in ancient land and its continuing use. His recent paintings are created on copper plate and seem to glow from within. Kent's artwork combinesthe elements of earth and sky with uncluttered simplicity, creating imagery that appeals to our minds and our souls.
