I love the American landscape. I've lived in Los Angeles my entire life, and grew up spending countless hours on family vacations driving through the western states of Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah. Palm Springs, Las Vegas, old cars, and trailer parks were the scenery of my youth. I am an American realist. I've always been drawn to tightly rendered work. I'm fascinated by the details. From early on, I remember being so enamored with the work of M.C.Escher. I had always loved photography, drawing, and painting, but the first time I tried watercolors, I knew I was home. From a painting perspective, the the California artists Edgar Payne, William Wendt, Wayne Thiebaud, Ralph Goings, and Robert Bechtle have been my biggest influences. Perhaps some other American art forms, from car design, to logos and lettering, to rock'n'roll, have influenced me even more. The Dodge Dart, the marquee at the El Rancho casino, and Chuck Berry have been my inspiration. My first requirement for my work is to only paint what I would want on my own wall. In that regard, I paint for me. That being said, my desire is to add something to the landscape of American realist painting. At the least, I want the quality of my work to express a gratitude for those things which inspire me and for the artists who have shown me the way.
