Freedom & Responsibiltiy (1985-1999)
80"hx90"w
Oil on Canvas
$50,000

Over 14 years of painting, Schooley created this painting while working on his Wilderness Series. This single canvas is the “Rosetta Stone” that can help decipher his code of conduct as an artist. The piece is the result of Schooley’s desire to clean up after a day on his studio. Starting in the upper left hand corner, Schooley would clear his palette at the end of each day by filling in a few squares on the 82x92 inch grid.

Not only does the 14 year process speak volumes about the artist’s patience and resolve, but it also takes an extreme close up of one of ordinary canvases. The arbitrary nature of the composition’s execution is belied by its overall coherence. It is a result of Schooley applying remnant paint to the canvas beginning in the top left hand corner and proceeding left to right and top to bottom. There are 1800 individual squares in this painting. It is signed on four corners so it may be hung in any way. It is the only painting in 91 years that the artist signed four times and is the only creation of it’s type by the artist.

The title tells Schooley’s life story which is a tale of a man with a Calvinistic work ethic and an artist’s desire to dream. The harmony in the painting reflects the harmony that Schooley discovered in his life and work.
